I've experienced the same speeds with multiple ftp clients. On the host I get transfer speeds near 1.5Mb/s to the same remote server. Running speedtest.net in the browser on the guest yields 15Mb down/5Mb up, same as the host.
The host is a Intel core 2 duo. I've tried using one and two cores on the guest with no noticeable difference. Updated VMware tools are installed on the guest and using NAT. Workstation 9.02.
I'm really stumped stumped here...
