WinXP Guest Drive Corrupt

Hi,

Sorry if this is a duplicate, I can't find my post from a couple days ago. Could really use some help with this as it is a recurring problem.

My setup is as follows:

Thinkpad X1 Carbon

Host: Win7 x64

Guest: WinXP Pro

vmware: 6.5.5 Workstation

I set up the guest as a new install from a WinXP CD. I purchased a copy of Workstation 9 but my Win98 VM guest runs very slow, same problem I've had on the last two versions of Workstation on different PCs.

Right now, the guest OS starts, I get the screen telling me about the USB devices, then it just stops. I get a black screen with no text. I use the WinXP to do a system repair but it still won't starts. In the past I've had errors (restored from a backup) with hal.dll missing or corrupt and c:\windows\system32\system missing or corrupt. When I restore an old version, it works fine. I do  disk checks and no errors. A few months later, I have the same problem.

Any ideas? TIA.

Regards-Michael G.
