Windows XP guest sound distortion (Workstation 12.5.x)

After installing VMware Tools, sound in Windows XP SP3 guest ran by Workstation Pro 12.5, became distorted and scratchy. This issue wasn't fixed in 12.5.1.

Host system: Windows 10 Pro, build 1607 a.k.a. Anniversary Update, latest updates were installed as well.

Same issue was encountered a few years ago on Windows 8.

VMware workstation 12.5 on Windows 10 - VMs and fonts way too high, cannot read

Hello

As the title states, I copied VMs from my old Windows 7 running VMware workstation 9 to a new laptop running Windows 10 and VMware workstation 12.5.

When I start the VMs, the resolution is way too high and fonts are really small. Looked online for any type of resolution and nothing has worked.

Tried right clicking the desktop shortcut and went to properties and compatibility to disable DPI setting, tried without success changing the individual VM display settings. Tried all different combinations.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Windows 2012 R2 Failover Cluster with Virtual RDM - Cluster Across Boxes

$

It seems difficult to find a solid answer to this question. VMs are running on vSphere 5.5 across multiple ESXi hosts. VMware documentation says both physical and virtual are supported in this configuration but physical is recommended. The same documentation also states, "Clusters across physical machines with non-pass-through RDM is supported only for clustering with Windows Server 2003. It is not supported for clustering with Windows Server 2008." But I am interested in 2012 R2.

Main reason I am looking to use virtual RDM is to run native Veeam backups. I am not overly thrill having to use the Veeam agent backup due to limitations and relying on Microsoft's VSS writer.

Anyone know what is officially supported by both VMware and Microsoft, and what works best especially when you want to run snapshot based backups?

Also, the clustering is being used on file servers.

Hi,

i tried to join a domain with my ESX Hosts in our Production. It won't work and i don't know why.

Here is the Case, probabyl someone has got an answer, that will work for me.

Production:

ESX6 Version 4600944

Windows Active Directory 2012

AD Account: User -> See all Computer Objects, Can create computer objects, Can delete computer objects

Output:

[root@esx4:~] /usr/lib/vmware/likewise/bin/domainjoin-cli join  DOMAIN.COM administrator@DOMAIN.COM

Joining to AD Domain:   DOMAIN.COM

With Computer DNS Name: esx4.DOMAIN.COM

administrator@DOMAIN.COM's password:

Error: LW_ERROR_KRB5KDC_ERR_C_PRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN [code 0x0000a309]

Client not found in Kerberos database

LDAP Paths:

DC=DOMAIN DC=COM OU=Server OU= Test OU=Infrastruktur

LAB:

ESX6 Version 4600944

Windows Active Directory 2012

AD Account: Administrator

AD Account: User -> All rights

Output:

[root@esx4:~] /usr/lib/vmware/likewise/bin/domainjoin-cli join  DOMAIN.COM administrator@DOMAIN.COM

Joining to AD Domain:   DOMAIN.COM

With Computer DNS Name: esx4.DOMAIN.COM

administrator@DOMAIN.COM's password:

SUCCESS

LDAP Paths:

1st way:

DC=DOMAIN DC=COM OU=Computers

2nd Way:

DC=DOMAIN DC=COM OU=Server OU= Test OU=Infrastruktur

Ways i tried:

  • Reach DNS Server [successful]
  • Reach DC [successful]
  • Lookup DNS [successful]

Update:

  1. Tried to connect to Port 636,389,53,88 from ESX to DC. [successful]

Maybe some rights are missing, do you know, which rights i need, for joining the domain.

Prefer ipv4 over ipv6 on a dual-stack ESXi host?

$

I can't believe I am the first one to ask this question, but search here and on the Internet in general did not produce any hits.

OMB mandated Fed Gov to enable dual stack which we complied with in my environment to include esxi 5.5 hosts

We still want to prefer ipv4 for everything, since we are not ready to go ipv6 only, and we want to avoid having some services using one stack and other services using the other. This creates extra overhead, complexity, troubleshooting issues, etc.

Right now we are dealing with the fact that a dual-stack esxi host uses ipv6 for syslog. While there are tons of info on how to prefer ipv4 on dual-stack Linux servers, there is nothing for ESXi.

Any help would be appreciated.

IE not closing issue in Linked Clone Pool

Config details at the end...

I'm having a weird issue where when IE is closed inside our VDI, its processes hang around for a minute or so or sometimes significantly longer despite no IE windows being left.

A second pool done from a completely newly-built golden image behaves the same way.

I also reproduced a similar issue in a standard VM under VMware Workstation where I also used the Optimization Tool and found the fix was to not disable the Windows Search service in the Optimization Tool!!!  In the VDI though, this fix did not help, nor did using a snapshot where NO Optimization Tool had been used.

I also tried disabling Persona Management (which we're using only to roam %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming) to no avail.

I don't suppose anyone has ever witnessed this before?  Thanks for reading.

Config:

View v6.2.2.  Pool is linked clones with Agent v6.2.3 on Win 7 Pro SP1 x86 with IE11.  Optimization Tool b1092 used.  Aside from .NET, the VM is fully patched to last month.

Network Introspection Agent is active in VMware Tools for Sophos Antivirus for VShield on the ESXi hosts (which are v6.0 Update 2).

Different sizes in vmware datastore and storwize v3700

I have vmware 5.5. All VMs are in thin provision.

When we delete large VMs, it is only reflected in vmware datastore, the v3700 does not undergo any changes, it does not decrease its size. The v3700 does not change.

There is a difference of almost 10 TB. Someone has happened to him something similar, he has seen these cases. There is something to configure in vmware and it does not delete in the storwize. Maybe some plugin. Thanks.

ESXi host shows "not responding" in vSphere web console after 60-90 seconds following disconnect/reconnect

I'm not sure where to go next with this, hoping someone can offer advice...

This is a fresh install of vCenter 5.5 and an existing ESXi 5.5 server. I see my ESXi host and all details in the web console, but it shows up as "not responding". I can successfully disconnect/reconnect but every time, 60-90 seconds after successful reconnect it goes back to "not responding".

FYI:

Is there anything else I can test or do to isolate what could be causing this? I'm happy to provide any needed additional details.

In a vSphere HA cluster, does every ESXi host need to be on the same VLAN/IP Subnet?

As usual, thanks!

Of course i already use a 6.5 version like i am connected to vCenter 6.5.

I tryed to to remove stored data, clear cache, change brower, remove CIP 5.5 et 6.0, reboot VCSA and finely change PC.

I tryed with root and administrator@vsphere.local.

Always the same message (popup)

Changing between full screen and window on VMRC generates error in vCenter

Hi,

I am running the latest version of vCenter 6.5 with the latest version of ESXi 6.5 on the hosts.

I have the VMRC installed

When I open a remote console with VMRC and go to full screen and then back to window I get the following logged in Recent Tasks

Name: VirtualMachine.setDisplayTopology.label

Status: The operation is not supported on the object

Going to full screen doesn't generate this. Only going back to window from full screen.

Any ideas?

Adding ESXi Hosts Via Natted IP and vCenter 6.5

Hey,

I'm having an issue at the moment adding ESXI hosts Via their Natted IP address to vCenter VCSA 6.5.

Previously I have successfully used this KB successfully  Using NAT between the vCenter Server system and ESXi/ESX hosts (1010652) | VMware KB for all previous version of vCenter.

The Server IP address in the vpxa.cfg file is correct and port 902 is open and telnet works

vSAN 6.2 Rebalancing not working, but a failover after a failure also not working

$

Hi all,

We are experiencing the following in a production environment.
Rebalancing never worked before, as this was not the main concern, it was on the bottom of the todo list.

Last Friday we had an issue with the Collection Data Provider for Performance Measurement. With VMware we fixed this.

We had a little discussion about the vSAN health and did together some check. All seems OK.

I mentioned that the rebalancing is not working. VMware said, well... it should be working fine now, try to run the rebalance this evening.
So I did, the following morning I checked vSAN, all stable but rebalance was not performed. So I did it again.

Sunday morning, same story... I started it and monitored it. After 10 ~ 15 minutes it was "done" (no message that it was done, only not saying Rebalancing....)

So I left it that way. Whole day no issues, but at 10.30 PM, a cache disk failed. (we encounted that, this morning).

The issue is, that a "failover" (we have tolerance of 1) did not happen. Vmware Composer still tries to create systems even on the failed disk group! Resulting in multiple issues.

Broken VM's etc.

What my main concern is, a rebalance does not initiate after hitting the button, a failover does not initiate after a disk failure.

I thought that the rebalance might have caused this issue, but rebalance takes place on the elastic drives, not the flash.

So, bad timing in that matter.

But it is very interesting that these things have relation in the way it is being initated, but not being performed.

At this moment we are troubleshooting with VWware, but anyone experienced the same thing? Or any suggestions?

vRA 7 - com.vmware.csp.cafe.notification.api error

Hello,

I'm currently evaluating vRA 7 and I'm encountering some errors while setting up approval notification. I was wondering if anyone else had already the same issue.

My deployment is a minimal deployment, along with an AD to store users and their emails. I'm trying to setup approval workflow (based on cpu and ram) with reply by email approval.

I've setup the approval policy (it works), the email outbound and inbound (pop). I receive notification as a user that my request was submitted but I dont as an approver receive any notification.

In the error tab I got the following error repeated:

Error Message: [nested exception is org.springframework.dao.IncorrectResultSizeDataAccessException: result returns more than one elements; nested exception is javax.persistence.NonUniqueResultException: result returns more than one elements]. Message: [GenericMessage [payload=RichNotification [recipientId=approver@domain.loc,

The approver is a security group.

Any idea ? Thanks in advance,

Joseph de Clerck.

Themis server is supported by vSphere?

Hi All,

I'm trying to figure out if the server Themis RES-XR5 can be used to run ESXi, but in the Compatibility Guide there are two old servers that supports only ESXi 4.

Does anyone know if it's supported or not?

Thanks,

Luca

The resource '24' is in use. But its not?! Cant delete VDSwitch.

First of, I am very new to vCenter...

I have created a dSwitch, and when I am going to delete it and start over I am getting this error:

The resource '24' is in use.

vDS ProductiondvSwitch port 24 is reserved by entity esxi1.xyz.local Virtual NIC vmk0, type:hostVmkVnic

Port 24 is my dManagement Port group.

When I go to Distributed Switch /.... / Manage / Ports I only see my Port gorups created and its "Blank".

When I go to the Settings tab. I see that the Switch dont have any NIC on its uplinks.

I can delete all Port Groups BUT dManagement.

All NICs stand Unused on dManagement.

The hosts are disconnected...

Anyone who can assist me?

vRealize Business 7.3 - Pricing custom properties gone

$

In vRBC 7.3 that was upgraded from 7.2 (perhaps irrelevant), I am seeing that the ability to select from either custom properties or software components is absent when trying to configure Additional Costs in a vRealize Automation pricing policy. These options were present in vRBC 7.2 but are gone in 7.3 as confirmed in two separate environments. As there is not a vRBC forum, is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a solution to restoring the ability to add additional costs based on such things as properties and software components?

Is vRO 7.3 supposed to work with vSphere 6.5?

I've installed the vRP 7.3 applicance (VMware-vRO-Appliance-7.3.0.21553-5521409_OVF10.ova) but it is unable to accept the certificate from my vSphere 6.5 instance:

Error! An error occurred while retrieving the Single Sign-On token from: https://10.2.53.90/lookupservice/sdk

Any ideas? Is 7.3 knowsn to work with vSphere authentication?

Sierra, Mavericks and Windows - What is possible?

$

0

My MacBook Pro has two partitions – one running MacOS Sierra 10.12.5 and the second running Mavericks 10.9.5 (for purposes of keeping commercially licensed software that is now only available as monthly/annually-paid subscriptions). I do not have any virtual systems.

I would like to install Fusion, and potentially Windows via Bootcamp, and achieve a 3-partition system which all three of these scenarios are possible:

  1. Startup disk is Sierra (partition 1) and through Fusion I can run Mavericks (partition 2) and/or Windows (partition 3) as needed
  2. Startup disk is Mavericks (partition 2), running legacy apps natively
  3. Startup disk is a Bootcamp-based Windows drive (partition 3)

While a dual-Sierra/Mavericks system is my only requirement, the option to have Windows as well is a big plus.  Before making any build changes that potentially “break” my current setup by running a trial, can anyone help to answer a couple of questions?  At this point, I am not looking for technical setup instructions – just “yes” or “no” to the possibilities so that I can eliminate either Fusion or Parallels from consideration (assuming their capabilities differ regarding my specific needs) before altering the drive(s).

  • Can I use Fusion to run my existing Mavericks drive within Sierra or will I have to reinstall the OS and legacy applications through Fusion?
  • Assuming a setup in which Mavericks can be run through Fusion in Sierra, can I run Mavericks natively by rebooting to it as my Startup Disk if/when needed? Whether I can use my existing drive or would have to reinstall through Fusion, I would still like the option to run natively, as I suspect heavy tasks may be cumbersome and/or problematic to run virtually.
  • If I add a Bootcamp-built Windows partition, can it also be run through Fusion in Sierra (or do I have to choose one or the other)?

Thanks in advance for reading through all of this.  I appreciate any insight.
